Background and Research Interests

Having published more than 180 peer reviewed articles and authored more than ten book chapters, Dr. Halvorson continues to contribute his vast knowledge of poultry health to the poultry industry and the University.  He started his career as a poultry pathologist with the Ralston Purina Company and after that served as the Director of Technical Services for DeKalb AgResearch.  He joined the University of Minnesota as an associate professor in 1978 and rose through the ranks until he retired as a professor in 2010.  During his notable career, he helped to develop and implement the
Minnesota Cooperative Avian Influenza Control Plan, to eradicate avian metapneumovirus from Minnesota turkeys, and to aid in changing the paradigm of the regulatory response to highly pathogenic avian influenza with the Secure Poultry Supply Plan. His research interest is the prevention and control of poultry diseases.
